I have purchased a radio online or from overseas and want to make sure it is type approved for use in Australia. Where can I find this information?

here are several things you can check:

Check our website to see if the company where you purchased the radio from is an authorised Icom Australia dealer. Click here for our authorised dealer listing.

Generally products purchased overseas will not be type approved making them illegal to use in Australia. Purchasing radios from overseas is a cheaper option in the short term however, there can be severe penalties for anyone who uses a “non” type approved radio in Australia. Make sure the serial number has not been tampered with or changed in any way.

Look for the regulatory compliance symbol

Contact Icom Australia with the model name and serial number and our customer service department can check it for you.

What happens if the radio is not type approved for use in Australia or has been imported into the country?

The ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) has very strong regulations in relation to non type approved products. Please refer to the link below for further details regarding the regulations and the potential penalties.

Will Icom Australia cover warranty on a non type approved or Grey import product?

The answer to this is no; Icom Australia will only provide warranty on products purchased in Australia through our authorised dealer network. Icom Australia ensures all products that are sold into the Australian marketplace have been type approved to meet all the regulatory requirements. This will ensure that the product is safe to use and complies with all the local regulations of the country.

I have purchased a radio that has not been type approved what can I do?

The best course of action is to contact the supplier of the goods and ask for a refund.
